Nicki Schmiegelow - Knitted textiles
Nicki worked in finance for many years before pursuing her long held interest in fabric and stitching with a series of adult education courses, including a textile foundation course at Morley College, London. A lifelong hand knitter, it was there that she was introduced to machine knitting. It ticked all the boxes - she could create fabrics which combined her love of colour and pattern with the softness of wool. She has been developing her practice in this field for the past 10 years. Nicki knits fabric using 100% lambswool, and then felts it gently with rainwater and organic soap. After repeated washing, stretching and pressing it becomes a soft, robust material, which she uses to make scarves, cushions and other items for the home. Her patterns are inspired by her garden and the beautiful surroundings of the Stroud valleys, as well as geometry and mid 20th century design. Nicki works from her studio in Amberley, near Stroud. Each item she produces is made individually, and much of her work is bespoke. |
