Clare Bassett - Artist
I have been working for over thirty years creating lithographs, screenprints and oil paintings of monumental female figures. I look at the familiar with an unsettled glance, as well as a touch of humour. My figures are not assured in their place in the world. For them life is often a bit of a puzzle. Sometimes their world even spirals into the dreamlike and surreal. Things are not always what we think.
My print editions are small as each one is hand-printed and then individually coloured. I work both in London and Gloucestershire, using a 1930’s Furnival lithographic press and lithographic stones.
More recently I have been creating work by responding to live dance movement, as well as developing a range of silver and semi-precious jewellery. Both the rapid, gestural, abstract drawing and the purely decorative element of the jewellery act as interesting foils to the figurative pieces.
